What do I need to use the plugin?
You need WordPress + WooCommerce, a Google Drive account, and a free Google Cloud project to create OAuth credentials and an API key. The setup is quick and explained step by step in the documentation.
Will my customers see Google Drive directly?
Customers download from their WooCommerce account as usual. In the background, Google Drive controls access. If you enable private email-based access, customers may also receive a Google Drive sharing invitation.
Is there a free version to test?
Yes. Drive Downloads Lite is available for free. Lite lets you connect Google Drive and link files/folders to WooCommerce downloadable products. Note: Lite does not grant/revoke access per order and does not manage Drive permissions—those features are Pro-only.
What does Pro add on top of Lite?
Pro adds automatic access control per order (grant/revoke), private buyer-only access by email, permission levels (view/comment/edit), advanced sharing/security options, and activity logs/order notes.
Do customers need a Google account or Gmail?
It depends on how you configure access. For private email-based access, customers typically need a Google account for that email to view shared Drive content. If you enable Gmail-only access, then a Gmail address is required.
Can I use Shared Drives or “Shared with me” files?
Yes, you can work with Shared Drives and items shared with your account, as long as your Google account has the appropriate permissions and your Drive/Workspace settings allow sharing.
Are my downloads public or private?
You decide. You can use public links (anyone with the link) or private buyer-only access (recommended for Pro). Private access is ideal when you want only the paying customer to view the content.
Does the plugin upload or store my files?
No. Your files stay in Google Drive. The plugin only links your products to Drive files/folders and (in Pro) manages access permissions.
What happens if I move or rename files/folders in Google Drive?
Renaming is usually fine. Moving items or changing sharing settings can affect access, depending on your configuration. If you reorganize Drive often, it’s best to test one product after changes.
Can I set different rules per product?
Yes. You can manage global defaults and override settings per product, so each product can have its own Drive item and access behavior.
What happens when the order is refunded or canceled?
In Pro, the plugin can automatically revoke access when an order is refunded, canceled, or otherwise set to a status you configure. Lite does not manage access per order.
Is it secure and does it prevent sharing?
Pro can significantly reduce unauthorized access by using buyer-only permissions and restrictive sharing settings, but no solution can guarantee 100% prevention of piracy or reshares. The goal is controlled access, not absolute DRM.
Is it compatible with caching/security plugins?
In most cases yes. If you use aggressive caching or security rules, exclude WooCommerce account/download endpoints from caching and ensure your site can make outbound requests to Google APIs.
